Good riddance: Typhoon Chanchu weakened into a severe tropical storm after making landfall east of Shantou.
*

All tropical cyclone signals were dropped around 4:40am on Thursday as Typhoon Chanchu made landfall to the east of Shantou.

At 8am, Chanchu had weakened into a severe tropical storm and was centred about 40 kilometres southwest of Xiamen. It is forecast to move northeast or north-northeast at about 30 kilometres an hour across Fujian.

Its position at 8am was about 24.3 degrees north, 117.8 degrees east.

The weather forecast for today calls for sunny periods and a few isolated showers. The maximum temperature will be about 26 degrees.
