Sustainable development fund opens

The Council for Sustainable Development invites applications for grants for projects that aim to raise public awareness of sustainable development and promote sustainable practices in Hong Kong.

The Council's Education and Publicity Sub-committee Chairman Christine Fang said today $10 million has been earmarked annually for grants from the Sustainable Development Fund, and this would be the third round of applications since the fund was established in 2003.

Council member Michael Lai said in the current round of applications, priority will be given to publicity projects with a strong element of community involvement, and those that create a measurable impact on sustainable development in Hong Kong and a legacy for sustainable practices within the community.

Projects that promote awareness of the three pilot areas in Hong Kong's first Sustainable Development Strategy - solid waste management, renewable energy and urban living space - and projects that target young people's involvement will also receive priority consideration.

In the first two rounds of application in 2003 and 2004, 10 projects were approved at a value of $10.85 million. For details of successful applications and progress of the projects concerned, click here.
