Lunar eclipse: The moon will only pass through the penumbra (partial shadow) of the earth's shadow without entering the umbra (total shadow) on April 24, from 3.50pm to 8pm. |
|
A penumbral eclipse of the moon will occur this Sunday. Weather permitting, local residents can observe it after moonrise that evening, during which the moon will become slightly dimmer.
The Hong Kong Observatory noted that during a "penumbral eclipse" the moon passes only through the penumbra - or partial shadow - of the earth's shadow without entering the umbra, or total shadow.
The penumbral eclipse will occur between 3.50pm and 8pm. Since the moonrise on that day is at 6.46pm, it will only be visible for around 1 hour and 14 minutes.

The best places to observe the eclipse will be those with an unobstructed view to the east-southeast such as Shek O and Sai Kung.
The next lunar eclipse observable in Hong Kong will occur on October 17. It will be a partial eclipse.
