Typhoon name contest opens
*

Do you have a knack for naming children, pets and other things? Then try naming a typhoon!

The Hong Kong Observatory and RTHK have organised the Tropical Cyclone Name Nomination Contest. From April 2 to 29, people can propose Hong Kong-themed names for inclusion in the tropical cyclone name list for the western North Pacific and the South China Sea.

Two winning names and four standby names will be selected to replace two current names. Results will be announced by the end of May.

Nomination forms can be obtained from District Offices, Post Offices and the Observatory's Resource Centre. They can also be downloaded from the observatory and RTHK websites. Contest details can be found here.

A list of 140 names is maintained by the Typhoon Committee - a body consisting of 14 countries and territories under the joint auspices of the United Nations Economic & Social Commission for Asia & the Pacific and the World Meteorological Organisation. The full list is here.
