Patrick Ho calls for wishing tree restraint

*

Secretary for Home Affairs Dr Patrick Ho urges people not to throw placards onto the wishing tree in Lam Tsuen, Tai Po, adding ways to save it are being considered which respect its traditions.

Speaking on a radio programme today, Dr Ho said a balance has to be struck between respecting traditional customs and preserving the tree. He said the views of village office have to be respected in considering the option of banning people from throwing wishing placards. An iron gate has been placed next to it for worshippers to put the placards.

Officers from the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation, Home Affairs, Food & Environmental Hygiene and Leisure & Cultural Services Departments have examined the tree. A Government-hired contractor has started removing placards from the tree three times a day.
