Special Area designation for Fung Shui woodland
*

The Environment, Transport & Works Bureau will designate a Fung Shui woodland at Lai Chi Wo as a special area for nature conservation and education purposes.

Under the Country Parks Ordinance, the Lai Chi Wo (Special Area) Order 2004 will take effect on March 15. It aims to better protect the woodland from development and incompatible human activities.

The Lai Chi Wo Fung Shui Woodland has high ecological and conservation value in terms of its woodland structure, species richness, diversity and composition. The upper part is already included in the Plover Cove Country Park.

To enhance its protection, the lower part is now designated as the city's 16th Special Area.

About one hectare in size, the area is located on a slope behind Lai Chi Wo Village. The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department will manage the area, which is protected under the Country Parks & Special Areas Regulations.

Despite its small size, more than 100 plant species are recorded there, including Langkok Fig and Golden-leaved Tree, which are rare in Hong Kong. Autumn Maple and Camphor Trees up to 20 metres tall can also be found there.

The department will put up interpretive signs to introduce the area's special plants and ecological features.

The Lai Chi Wo (Special Area) Order 2004 will be gazetted on December 17 and tabled at the Legislative Council on January 5.
