Sarah Liao rejects Hunghom Peninsula plan

*

Secretary for Environment, Transport & Works Dr Sarah Liao has rejected the demolition plan for Hunghom Peninsula, which she says violates green principles and wastes resources.

She said today she does not support the demolition, and urged developers to recycle and reuse all construction materials.

NWS Holdings and Sun Hung Kai Properties announced yesterday their plan to redevelop the estate, which would mean the demolition of the brand new housing blocks.

The developers have been asked to carefully plan the overall demolition process, and submit a comprehensive waste management plan to ensure all statutory requirements will be met.

Dr Liao said the Government will study the plan in detail and closely monitor its implementation. Developers have been urged to do their best to avoid wastage and minimise disruptions to the neighbourhood.

On the developers' claim that up to 95% of the construction materials will be recycled to minimise waste, and that a few thousand of the 190,000 tonnes of construction debris will be sent to landfills, Dr Liao said developers should recycle and reuse all construction materials to achieve the waste-free target.
