Of the eight beaches open to the public, seven have been rated "good" and one "fair" for this weekend, according to the Environmental Protection Department's latest grading. Other beaches were closed from November 1 for the winter season.

The seven beaches rated "good" are Big Wave Bay Beach, Deep Water Bay Beach, Middle Bay Beach, Repulse Bay Beach, Stanley Main Beach, Clear Water Bay Second Beach and Silverstrand Beach. Water quality at Golden Beach remains "fair".

Compared with last week's grading, there is no change in the grading of the eight beaches.

The department said the changes are generally within the normal range of fluctuation of the bacteriological water quality of the beach.

As many beaches are likely to be more polluted than their grades suggest during and after periods of heavy rain, bathers are advised to avoid swimming at beaches for up to three days after a storm or heavy rainfall.

More information can be obtained from the department's website or through the hotline, 2511 6666.
