Hi-res images improve weather watching

*
Reception System
Weather watch: The Reception System for Earth Observing Satellites at King's Park.
*

High-resolution satellite images of Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta Region will be disseminated by the Hong Kong Observatory from today.

The images will bring the public a better appreciation of the changes in weather as mentioned in the observatory's reports and forecasts. People will be able to easily visualise cloud, fog, haze and sea surface temperatures around Hong Kong and neighbouring areas.

A new satellite reception system went into operation last month. It receives high-resolution images from two NASA satellites which take pictures of the atmosphere, land and sea around Hong Kong four times daily.

The images have a resolution of 250 metres on the ground, four times higher than previous images, giving the observatory a closer view of weather systems.

Images will be made available to the public through the observatory's website.
