Steps to safeguard HK tourism's reputation
*

Short-term improvement measures will be implemented to maintain Hong Kong tourism's reputation, Commissioner for Tourism Philip Yung says, adding the Government will strengthen its cooperation with Mainland authorities to combat inbound travel agencies' malpractices.

Speaking on a radio talk show today, Mr Yung expressed regret over the death of a Mainland tourist who allegedly quarrelled with an unlicensed tour guide over forced shopping on May 22.

Noting the incident was unacceptable, he said Police and the Travel Industry Council are investigating the case and will impose tough penalties if investigations uncover illegal acts.

The incident showed that there is room for improvement in the arrangement of shopping itineraries and the authentication of tour guides' identity and qualifications, he added.

The Government will deal with the issue in an appropriate manner and will formulate medium and long-term regulatory measures to ensure the trade's healthy development.

He said the Shenzhen tourist authorities have agreed to pass packaged tours' information to Hong Kong to facilitate the Travel Industry Council's early supervision.

The concerned authorities will also consider sending undercover officers to conduct checks on inbound travel agencies.

To enhance Hong Kong tourism's long-term competitiveness, the council will put more effort into upgrading the trade's services quality and staff training.

The Government will continue its work in developing new tourism facilities such as the expansion of Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park, and the construction of the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal.
