Rita Lau welcomes Prof Kao's visit
*

Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Rita Lau said today the Government is highly honoured to have Nobel Laureate in Physics Prof Charles Kao and his wife in Hong Kong.

At the joint invitation of the Government and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof Kao and Mrs Kao will be in Hong Kong for the next two months to participate in activities in recognition of his outstanding achievements in optical fibre research.

The Government looks forward to paying tribute to Prof Kao in recognition of his outstanding work and dedication to scientific research in optical fibre, "which has opened for mankind the era of high-speed information network transmission and forever changed the way people live and communicate," Mrs Lau said.

The professor and Mrs Kao will attend the naming ceremony of the Charles K Kao Auditorium at Hong Kong Science Park, the prize presentation ceremony of the Stamp Sheetlet Design Competition organised by the Leisure & Cultural Services Department, and other events.
