The Labour & Welfare Bureau is reviewing the Transport Support Scheme and the Government will consider public views when planning the way forward.

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung told lawmakers today the Government has been encouraging public transport operators to impose fare cuts or concessions to help reduce commuter expense, taking into account their operating and financial conditions, the overall economic environment and passenger needs.

The scheme provides a time-limited transport subsidy to encourage jobseekers and low-income employees living in the four designated remote districts - Yuen Long, Tuen Mun, North and Islands Districts - where job opportunities are fewer and transport costs are higher, to seek work across the city.

The Legislative Council's Panel on Manpower will meet tomorrow to hear views from deputations on the scheme.

"The administration will take the views into account when mapping out the way forward. We will brief the [panel] as soon as possible after the review has been completed," Mr Cheung said.

He added the Government will monitor the economic situation and consider other relief measures.
