Acting Commissioner for Innovation & Technology Andrew Lai says the Government has allocated $200 million to implement the Research & Development Cash Rebate Scheme in April, subject to legislative approval.

Firms conducting applied R&D projects with the Innovation & Technology Fund's support, or in partnership with local designated research institutions like universities, R&D centres and the Productivity Council, will enjoy a cash rebate equivalent to 10% of their investment.

Mr Lai was speaking at the Electrical Appliances Week 2009 opening ceremony and award presentation for the 11th Household Appliances Design & Innovation Competition 2009 today.

He said as the sphere of R&D has no borders, the exchange and co-operation between the academic sector and industries can increase the chances of success in commercialising R&D results, boost business opportunities for manufacturers and contribute to the community's advancement.

"Like this design competition, innovation can bring in new opportunities for even an ordinary electrical appliance," he said, adding moving towards high technology has now become the dominant trend.

The competition, he noted, has given full play to many talented people and lots of winning designs have been turned into products, making significant contributions to the development of industries. Likewise, winning entries this year will bring new impetus to the electrical manufacturing sector.
