Transport sector receipts up 4.7%

The transport sector's total receipts, including business receipts and other income, rose 4.7% in 2008 over a year earlier, to $544.8 billion, the Census & Statistics Department says.

 

The sector's gross surplus dropped 41.6% to $33.7 billion, accounting for 6.2% of total receipts last year. The value-added of the sector fell 8.9% to $91.5 billion.

 

The four largest major industry groups in terms of value-added were land passenger transport, services incidental to transport, air transport, and ocean and coastal water transport. They together accounted for 84.7% of the whole sector's total value-added.

 

The land passenger transport industry's total receipts amounted to $35.7 billion. Value-added dropped 2.5% to $21.4 billion. Gross surplus was $9.3 billion and accounted for 26% of total receipts.

 

Total receipts of the services incidental to the transport industry amounted to $236.3 billion. Value-added grew 1.6% to $21.2 billion. Gross surplus was $8.4 billion and accounted for 3.6% of total receipts.

 

The air transport industry's total receipts amounted to $112.2 billion. Value-added fell 46.9% to $17.6 billion. Gross deficit was $700 million.

 

Total receipts of the ocean and coastal water transport industry amounted to $128.3 billion. Value-added dropped 23.1% to $17.3 billion. Gross surplus was $11 billion and accounted for 8.6% of total receipts.
