Q2 construction works up 3.2%

The total gross value of construction works performed by main contractors in this year's second quarter grew 3.2% to $25.9 billion in nominal terms, compared to a year ago, but fell 1.2% in real terms, after discounting the effect of price changes.

 

Releasing the figures today, the Census & Statistics Department said analysed by the type of construction works, the gross value of construction performed at private-sector sites totalled $8.9 billion, up 9.7% in nominal terms over a year earlier and 0.9% in real terms.

 

For public-sector sites the gross value rose 18.9% in nominal terms to $4.5 billion and 11.9% in real terms.

 

Construction performed by main contractors at locations other than construction sites amounted to $12.5 billion, down 5.3% in nominal terms and down 6.3% in real terms. Such works include minor new construction activities and decoration, repair and maintenance for buildings, and electrical equipment installation and maintenance works at locations other than construction sites.

 

Residential building projects accounted for the largest share of works at construction sites, amounting to $6.6 billion, up 31% in nominal terms over a year earlier.

 

Service building projects constituted the second-largest group of construction site works, totalling $2.2 billion, up 41.2% in nominal terms.
