Internet copyright treaties imposed
*

Two Internet treaties - the World Intellectual Property Organisation's Copyright Treaty and Performances & Phonograms Treaty - for updating and improving copyright protection and related rights in light of new digital technologies are applicable to Hong Kong from today.

Hong Kong's copyright law fully complies with the international standards enshrined in the treaties, the Commerce & Economic Bureau says, adding the exclusive rights it gives to phonogram producers provides them with a higher level of protection than the right to equitable remuneration laid down in the treaties.

The few remaining requirements of the treaties on performers' rights and rental rights have been incorporated in the amended Copyright Ordinance effective April 25.
