*
Census & Statistics Department

The total gross value of construction work main contractors performed grew to $24.8 billion in the second quarter, up 7.8% on the same period last year, the Census & Statistics Department says.

After discounting price changes the total gross value of construction main contractors performed rose 2.5% in real terms.

Analysed by work type the gross value of construction work performed at private sector sites totalled $7.7 billion, up 4.1% in nominal terms. In real terms it fell 4.1%. The rise was mainly associated with the progressive enhancement of works at some large commercial building sites.

The gross value of construction works performed at public sector sites grew 4.7% in nominal terms from a year earlier to $3.7 billion in the second quarter. In real terms it fell 4.5%.

The gross value of construction works performed at locations other than construction sites rose 11% in nominal terms to $13.3 billion. It grew 9.3% in real terms.

Analysed by end-use group, residential building projects accounted for the largest share in the gross value of construction works performed at construction sites. The gross value of these projects amounted to $4.8 billion, up 17% in nominal terms from a year earlier.

Commercial building projects constituted the second largest category of construction site works. The gross value of these projects totalled $2.4 billion, down 15.7% in nominal terms.

On a seasonally adjusted quarter-to-quarter basis, the gross value of construction works main contractors performed grew 1.6% in nominal terms in the second quarter over the first quarter, but fell 0.3% in real terms.
