MPF injection bill to be tabled

Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority

A bill providing the legal framework for implementing the Budget proposal of injecting $6,000 into eligible Mandatory Provident Fund accounts will be tabled to lawmakers June 18, the Financial Services & the Treasury Bureau says.

The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Ordinance must be revised because the existing law does not provide for contributions to be made to MPF accounts by anyone other than employers, employees and the self-employed.

The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes (Amendment) Bill 2008, to be gazetted Friday, will also empower the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority to collect and make use of necessary information for compiling a list of people who are eligible to receive the injection.

The bureau will strive to start injecting funds into the relevant accounts this financial year. It is expected 1.7 million people will be eligible to receive the injection.
