The World Exposition 2010 Shanghai China provides an excellent opportunity for Hong Kong to demonstrate its successful implementation of the 'One country, two systems' principle since unification, and the city's achievements and strengths.
Permanent Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Joshua Law, who led a government delegation to Shanghai and attended a consultative meeting on World Expo 2010 Shanghai China today, made these remarks at a briefing.
He said the Hong Kong Government attaches great importance to taking part in the Shanghai Expo and has set up a steering committee chaired by the Chief Secretary to plan the project and co-ordinate cross-bureau efforts.
Since October, government representatives have met their Shanghai counterparts and stakeholders in Hong Kong - including the commerce and industry sector, creative industry, tourism and relevant professional bodies - to discuss the city's participation in the expo.
Hong Kong has submitted the theme for its pavilion to the expo organiser - Hong Kong - A City with Unlimited Potential. It will display the city's unique strengths in connecting with the Mainland and the world, its quality of life, position as a global city and creative capital.
Mr Law said the Government is also planning to enroll in the Urban Best Practice Areas exhibition jointly with local enterprises and the creative industry, to organise or participate in other related activities like World Expo seminars, Internet World Expo, Hong Kong Week, parades and cultural performances, and to encourage Hong Kong's renowned international brand name enterprises to join the Enterprise Pavilion exhibition.
The delegation will return to Hong Kong on January 22.
