Performing arts funding to be reviewed

The Funding Committee for the Performing Arts will review the present subvention arrangement for the performing-arts sector and develop new funding-assessment criteria and disburse subventions under the new funding model from 2009.

The Competition Policy Advisory Group's 2006-07 annual report published today outlines the results of the public-consultation exercise on competition policy, competition-related complaints and their current positions.

During the year, the advisory group examined 11 competition cases, of which eight were not substantiated. Two are still under investigation and one is pending policy review. The latter case involves a complaint on the government subvention policy for the performing-arts sector. The complainant said the current policy has created unfair competition among performing groups and suggests channeling more support to young and budding artists and arts groups, and stopping government subvention to art forms with market support.

The Home Affairs Bureau said the Funding Committee for the Performing Arts will review the present subvention arrangement for the performing-arts sector.

The committee expects to develop new funding-assessment criteria and disburse subventions under the new funding model from 2009 to ensure fair competition in the sector.
