Novel bill: Financial Secretary Henry Tang explains the new $10 polymer note's features to a shopkeeper in Lei Yue Mun Plaza.

Preparatory work for the launch of the new $10 polymer note is almost complete, Financial Secretary Henry Tang says, adding they will be put into circulation gradually from July 9.

Attending a Monetary Authority exhibition today, Mr Tang said experience in countries that have introduced polymer notes suggests that they are cleaner, more durable and more secure.

"They are also more environmentally friendly, since they last longer and can be recycled for other uses. As a vibrant international city, I believe it is essential for Hong Kong to explore this alternative technology."

Accompanied by student ambassadors, Mr Tang visited shops in a mall to introduce the new note's security features and special characteristics to proprietors and consumers.

In the coming weeks the ambassadors will visit major shopping centres to distribute leaflets promoting the new notes, and man exhibition booths in housing estates.

The notes will be gradually available for exchange in bank branches from July 9. The authority will evaluate the note's acceptability over the next two years.
