Busy boundary: Hong Kong residents made 65.8 million trips to the Mainland last year, with 66% for personal travel.

Hong Kong residents made 65.8 million trips to the Mainland last year, with 66% for personal travel, the Census & Statistics Department says. Of the 43.4 million personal trips, 55% were to Shenzhen.

According to the May 2007 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics released today, business travel accounted for 34% or 22.4 million trips.

For the 43.4 million personal trips, 55% were destined for Shenzhen, 40% for other places in Guangdong and 5% for other places on the Mainland.

Analysed by length of stay, about 36% were same-day trips. The remaining 64% were overnight trips, with the average length of stay about 3.4 nights.

Total consumption expenditure of Hong Kong residents travelling to the Mainland amounted to $26.3 billion. The average expenditure per person-trip was $610. For overnight trips, the average expenditure was $780 and that for same-day trips was around $290.

The report also carries features on Hong Kong's research and development from 2001 to 2005, the electronic products and electronics industry, and the jobless rate's movement last year. Click here to download it free.
