Personalised car plates auction
Up for grabs: The first auction of personalised vehicle registration marks will be held September 16 at the Convention & Exhibition Centre.

The first auction of personalised vehicle registration marks will be held September 16 at the Convention & Exhibition Centre. A total of 210 approved marks will be auctioned.

The list of approved marks has been posted the Transport Department's website, and published in newspapers today.

The reserve price of all these marks is $5,000. Applicants who have paid a deposit of $5,000 should also participate in the bidding, including the first bid at the reserve price. Otherwise, the mark concerned may be sold to another bidder.

Upon completion of the transaction, the completed Memorandum of Sale, a receipt and a Certificate of Allocation will be issued to the purchaser.

The certificate will contain the particulars of the mark holder, the arrangements of the mark, the auction date and price. It will list out the points to note for the holder, including a reminder that the Commissioner for Transport may cancel the allocation of a mark at any time after that allocation if the mark is not or is no longer appropriate for allocation. Under such circumstances, only the auction price will be refunded to the mark holder.

The certificate will serve to prove the mark's ownership. Potential buyers of vehicles bearing a personalised mark should check the certificate with the sellers and pay attention to the details. In addition to the documents normally required for transfer of vehicle ownership, the certificate of allocation should be produced to the department for processing.
