Restricted access proposed for MC6
*

To ensure public order and the smooth conduct of the 6th WTO Ministerial Conference, the Government has proposed forming a restricted-access zone around the Convention & Exhibition Centre.

In a Legislative Council paper, the Government estimates thousands of demonstrators may flock to MC6. To enable safe demonstrations, the Government will consider sites in Wan Chai and Causeway Bay.

To ensure order, public safety and the smooth conduct of MC6, the Government says roads leading to the centre should be closed and some public transport routes diverted.

Putting the arrangement in place under Public Order Ordinance section 36, the Chief Executive can, for public safety, declare any place be a closed area. The restriction will be effective from 6pm on December 12 to early December 19.

The Government will table the proposal in October.
