Good news expected from WTO meeting: CE

*

Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa says he looks forward to seeing a successful outcome from the World Trade Organisation Sixth Ministerial Conference to be held in Hong Kong from December 13 to 18 next year. He has invited all APEC member economies to attend.

Speaking at the conclusion of the 12th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Santiago, Mr Tung said all APEC member economies should give their earnest support to a rewarding outcome for the Doha Round of WTO negotiations.

"As a staunch supporter of the multilateral trading system, I believe the key lies in all WTO members exercising flexibility and injecting political will in the decision-making process," he said.

"We should work towards the development of a concrete package for improved market access for goods and services, and to do so with the special interests of developing economies in their minds.

"We should maintain the process of reform and liberalisation of trade policies to ensure that the multilateral trading system plays its full part in promoting recovery, growth, development and alleviating poverty," he said.

Mr Tung also shared with leaders Hong Kong's success in its fight against corruption. He supported initiatives adopted by APEC member economies to fight corruption in a bid to boost transparency and accountability in the proper management of public affairs and public property in the region.

The annual APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting ended today with a joint declaration "One Community, Our Future". Korea will host next year's annual meeting in Seoul.
