Q2 restaurant receipts up 21.4%
*
Census & Statistics Department

The value of total receipts for the restaurant sector was $12.8 billion in the second quarter, up 21.4% compared with the same period last year. Restaurant total purchases rose 19.1% to $4.3 billion.

The Census & Statistics Department released these provisional figures today.

After discounting the effect of price changes, total restaurant receipts rose 21.2% in volume, underpinned by the recent pickup in inbound tourism and local consumer spending.

Total receipts of Chinese restaurants rose 25.1% in both value and volume, while non-Chinese restaurants rose 21.2% in value and 21% in volume. Total receipts of miscellaneous eating and drinking places rose 20.1% in value or 20.7% in volume.

Total receipts of fast food shops rose 14.8% in value or 13.4% in volume while total receipts of bars rose 10% in value or 10.4% in volume.

On a seasonally adjusted quarter-to-quarter comparison, the volume of total restaurant receipts rose 1.3%.

Comparing the first half of 2004 with the same period in 2003, total restaurant receipts rose 11.8% in value or 12% in volume.
