Manufacturers' orders value slips 8% in September

*
Census & Statistics Department

The value of manufacturers' orders-on-hand for local production fell 8% in September from a year earlier. All major industries reported a decline.

The fabricated metal products industry saw the largest fall -of 21% - followed by electronic products (-18%), electrical products (-6%), textiles (-5%), wearing apparel (-2%), printing and publishing (-2%), and plastic products (-1%).

On a seasonally-adjusted basis, the value of manufacturers' orders-on-hand for the three months ended September  increased by 2% over the three months ended June.

Orders-on-hand are usually regarded as a leading indicator of the performance of domestic exports. However, as orders placed for production outside Hong Kong are not included, manufacturers' orders-on-hand cannot be used to reflect the performance of re-exports.
