School drug-testing trial running well
*

The school drug testing trial scheme in Tai Po is running smoothly, with 1,689 of the 2,139 students randomly selected having taken the screening test. No confirmed positive case has been found.

More than 12,400 students have joined the trial scheme. They are generally positive about it, and co-operative. No complaints have been received.

Of the 2,139 selected students, 398 were assessed as being not suitable for the test due to their physical condition or having taken medications. Forty-six students could not provide a urine specimen at the relevant time. Six refused to take the test and the schools contacted their parents according to the protocol.

Since the scheme's launch, two false-positive cases were found after the Government Laboratory's confirmatory testing. The concerned students and parents were immediately informed of the results.

A professional research organisation has been commissioned to assess the scheme's design, implementation and effectiveness. It will study other local and overseas experiences and suggest appropriate refinements and revisions. The study will be completed in the third quarter.
