No more S4 streaming, survey finds

*

A recent survey on new senior secondary subject information shows schools no longer adopt the traditional practice of streaming students into arts, science and commercial classes.

The poll, conducted by the Education Bureau in October and November, collected information on the new senior secondary subjects offered at Secondary Four level in the current school year from 453 schools.

Highlighting the results to legislators today, Secretary for Education Michael Suen today said more students take economics (34.4%), geography (22.5%), biology (26.8%), chemistry (27.7%), physics (25.6%), business, accounting and financial studies (29.8%) and Chinese history (16.4%).

About 95% of Secondary Four students take two or three elective subjects, with 35,000 students taking two elective subjects, amounting to 45% of Secondary Four students and 190 subject combinations.

About 39,000 students take three elective subjects, amounting to half the Secondary Four population and 770 subject combinations.

It also shows students can take their elective subjects in accordance with their own interest and ability as well as the school situation, he said.
