Man dies, schools close due to swine flu

An 84-year-old man suffering from human swine flu and tuberculosis died at Queen Mary Hospital today.

 

He had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension and a stroke and was transferred to the hospital for management of his chronic disease on September 2.

 

He came down with a fever and pneumonia September 5 and was confirmed to have human swine flu September 8. He was given Tamiflu and antibiotics.

 

He was also confirmed to have tuberculosis September 17 and died at 10.43am today.

 

3 schools close

A primary school and two secondary schools will suspend classes for seven days due to influenza-like illness outbreaks involving 216 students and three staff.

 

The schools are Farm Road Government Primary School in Kowloon City, Ko Lui Secondary School in Kwun Tong and Pui Kiu Middle School in North Point.

 

Six students in two schools have tested positive to human swine influenza so far. All affected students are stable.

 

There were 783 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza in the 24 hours to 2.30pm today, bringing to 24,681 the total number of confirmed cases in Hong Kong.
