Michael Suen commends teachers

Saluting teachers: Secretary for Education Michael Suen speaks at the Salute to Teachers 2009 - Teachers' Day & Commendation Certificate Presentation Ceremony.

*

More than 1,300 teachers from secondary and primary schools and kindergartens were presented with certificates under the Teachers Commendation Scheme today.

The scheme is in its 14th year and fosters a culture of respect for teachers. Kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools can each nominate two teachers who have shown commitment and excellence in teaching.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony today, Secretary for Education Michael Suen said the implementation of the new senior secondary academic structure in the new school year is a milestone. It will enhance the competitiveness of Hong Kong's next generation in the face of challenges posed by globalisation.

Mr Suen added small-class teaching started in Primary One this school year. Public sector primary schools, where conditions allow, can extend the arrangement in phases to Primary Six gradually to improve the effectiveness of learning and teaching.
