HK students top the world in P4 maths

*

Hong Kong students performed outstandingly in the Trends in International Mathematics & Science Study (TIMSS) 2007, the Education Bureau says.

In mathematics Primary Four students hit the top spot last year, up on it's 2003 global position of second, while Secondary Two students ranked fourth.

In science P4 students ranked third, up from fourth in 2003.

The bureau said Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2006 results announced last December showed the scientific and mathematical literacy of Hong Kong students aged 15 ranked second and third among the 57 participating jurisdictions.

Hong Kong students did well in TIMSS 2007 and PISA 2006, and Hong Kong is one of the few jurisdictions whose students rank in the world's top four in both studies.
