Five Hong Kong students will participate in the 39th International Physics Olympiad in Vietnam from July 20 to 29, the Education Bureau says.

They are the bureau's Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme members and prize-winners of the last Hong Kong Physics Olympiad.

Deputy Secretary for Education Chris Wardlaw presented a flag today to Prof Yang Zhi-yu who will lead the Hong Kong team. More than 70 five-member teams from around the world will take part in this year's contest.

Students who made outstanding achievements in the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad held in May received prizes at the ceremony.

Twenty students were awarded First Honour, 39 took Second Honour, and 45 took Third Honour. Twenty-five were awarded an Honourable Mention.

The high-achieving Secondary Four and Five awardees will participate in enhancement training sessions and their physics teachers will participate in professional development. Outstanding students will be selected to join the 40th International Physics Olympiad in Mexico next July.
