Three schemes enhance youths' job prospects
*
Labour Department

The unemployment rate of youths aged 15-19 has dropped from 37% in June-August last year to 24% in March-May this year - from 28,800 down to 16,000, the Labour Department says.

To help cut the number of unemployed youths, the department is rolling out three youth training schemes for school leavers.

Speaking on a radio programme today, Assistant Commissioner for Labour Tsang Kin-wo said youths aged 15-19 can join the "Youth Pre-employment Training Programme" for pre-employment training.

Those aged 15-24 can join the "Youth Work Experience & Training Scheme" for on-the-job training, while the "Youth Self-employment Support Scheme" targets those aged 18-24 who want to start their own businesses.

Since the implementation of the "Youth Pre-employment Training Programme" in 1995, the average employment rate of the trainees is over 70%, while the "Youth Work Experience & Training Scheme" has helped more than 22,000 youths to get a job in the past two years.

He pointed out that overall economic growth with more job creation is the solution to unemployment problem.

Mr Tsang said the response to the "Youth Self-employment Support Scheme" that launched in May has been overwhelming, with 4,000 applications received so far.

"Under the scheme, training providers will offer courses and practical training to participants, who need not prepare for their initial capital. But applicants should demonstrate their interests in and knowledge of the business areas they choose," he said.

Apply on site at Information Expo 2004

Mr Tsang reminded school leavers that they can apply for the three schemes at the 'Information Expo for Secondary School Leavers 2004" held today and tomorrow from 10am to 7pm at Plaza Hollywood in Diamond Hill.

The Labour Department will also hold an exhibition and admission day on the "Youth Pre-employment Training Programme" and the "Youth Work Experience & Training Scheme" at Shatin New Town Plaza on August 4 & 5.

For enquiries on the "Youth Pre-employment Training Programme" and the "Youth Work Experience & Training Scheme", call 2835 2282. If you have questions on the "Youth Self-employment Support Scheme", call 2852 3817.
