Forty Mainland students joined 1,261 talented students from Secondary Four to Secondary Six nominated by 179 local secondary schools in the second Hong Kong Physics Olympiad held at the University of Science & Technology today.
The guest contestants from Guangdong Province were delegated by the Physics Teaching Professional Committee of the Education Association of China. It was the first time Mainland students took part in the contest.
Jointly organised by the university, the Education & Manpower Bureau, the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad Committee and the Hong Kong Physical Society, the competition aims to promote physics education in Hong Kong while making available enhancement opportunities to the gifted physics students to further their studies in this area.
It was administered in the form of a three-hour written examination with multiple-choice and open-ended questions. Participants were awarded First, Second and Third Honours and Honourable Mention based on their individual performance.
Top performers to join Spanish competition Results will be announced on the "Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme" website in late June. An award presentation ceremony will be held on July 10 at the university.
A series of structured enhancement training will be organised for the high-achieving S4 and S5 students, along with professional development for their teachers.
After the training, a number of the most outstanding students will be selected to represent Hong Kong in the 36th International Physics Olympiad to be held in Spain in July 2005.
