The start of communication between the Central Government and Hong Kong's democrats will help narrow opinion differences on the city's constitutional development, Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Stephen Lam says.
Welcoming the recent meetings between representatives of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong, the Democratic Party and pan-democratic camp members, he said the Government will continue conveying different parties' views and suggestions to the Central Government.
Noting the Hong Kong Government will not underestimate the difficulties in gaining sufficient support for the passage of proposed constitutional development package for 2012, he said a resolution will be tabled at the Legislative Council when lawmakers' discussion on the proposals comes to an end.
"Between now and the voting of the resolution on the 2012 reforms, the Government will continue to try our very best to secure each and every vote among Legislative Councillors for this package to be passed to roll forward democracy in 2012 and pave the way for the eventual implementation of universal suffrage in 2017 and 2020."
