The body of Hong Kong volunteer Wong Fuk-wing, who lost his life saving others during the earthquake in Qinghai, returned to his home city with full honours tonight.
Secretary for Justice Wong Yan-lung, Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing, Chief Executive's Office Director Raymond Tam and Under Secretary for Security Lai Tung-kwok received the hearse at a ceremony at the Shenzhen Bay control point.
Aide-de-Camp Steve Hui represented Chief Executive Donald Tsang, and several senior Central Government Liaison Office officials attended, along with Mr Wong's Hong Kong relatives.
Chief Executive Donald Tsang commends Mr Wong for his volunteer work and for his selfless and courageous act. During the earthquake in Qinghai, the volunteer worker at Ci Xing Xi Yuan Hui orphanage escaped the building unhurt after the initial tremor, but returned to save children and teachers trapped inside. Mr Wong and others had rescued three children and a teacher when an aftershock caused the building to collapse, burying him.
The Government will provide all possible assistance to Mr Wong's family, and help with his funeral arrangements.
