Hong Kong's population reached 7,026,400 at the end of last year, up 37,500 or 0.5% on a year earlier, the Census & Statistics Department says.

Births and the inflow of one-way permit holders were key constituents of the overall population rise. The population's natural increase was 41,900 - resulting from 82,100 babies born to both Hong Kong and non-Hong Kong residents and 40,200 deaths. Last year saw a negative net movement of 4,400 residents.

The ratios of births and deaths to the overall population growth were 219% and 107%. The inflow of one-way permit holders was 48,600 and outflow was 53,000. Their ratios to the overall population rise were 130% and 141%.

Among the total population, 6,816,900 were usual residents and 209,500 mobile residents. The population figure does not include visitors. As at the end of 2009, there were 467,900 visitors.

The department also revised the provisional figures for the 2009 mid-year population to 7,003,700 with 6,797,700 usual residents and 206,000 mobile residents. The population growth rate from mid-2008 to mid-2009 was revised to 0.4%.
