More than 30 government offices have organised a three-day fair focused on science in the public service opened today in Victoria Park.

Chief Executive Donald Tsang, Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Rita Lau and Observatory Director Lam Chiu-ying officiated at the opening ceremony.

Mrs Lau commended government departments for their achievements in innovation and use of technology.

"The development of science and technology has not only made life more convenient but has also increased the work efficiency of all business sectors. There are also many success stories among government departments and the public sector in the application of science as well as research and development," she said.

Today's fun fair is the largest inter-departmental event since the launch of the Science in the Public Service campaign two years ago. Mrs Lau said the Chief Executive's presence today showed the Government attaches great importance to science education and technology application.

Mr Lam, a campaign initiator, said it has been widely recognised over the past two years, with the number of partners increasing from 30 to 43. Hundreds of thousands of people have joined in the activities.

The participating bureaux, departments and collaborating organisations showcase their scientific work and the application of science and technology in providing their services, through exhibitions, demonstrations, interactive games and workshops.

There are also band performances, police dog and quarantine detector dog demonstrations, rescue performances, quizzes, lectures and a talk show.

Opening hours for the fun fair are from 10am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free. Click here for campaign information.
