CE congratulates Barack Obama

Chief Executive Donald Tsang has congratulated Barack Obama on his victory in the US presidential election today on behalf of Hong Kong people, and has invited him to visit the city.

In his congratulatory message, Mr Tsang said Mr Obama's win heralds a new chapter in history - not just for the American people, but for the relationship between the United States and the rest of the world.

Mr Tsang is confident under Mr Obama's leadership, the US will remain committed to the ideals of open trade and will play a leading role to stabilise global financial markets during this time of turmoil.

"I can assure you Hong Kong, as a global financial centre, will work closely with the US and other international partners to restore calm and confidence to the market," he said, adding the city and the US have long enjoyed a cordial and fruitful relationship.

Noting Hong Kong is home to one of the largest concentrations of American citizens and business interests in Asia, including more than 850 companies with regional offices or operations, Mr Tsang invited Mr Obama to pay a visit.
