Second opinion: Chief Executive Donald Tsang will form a committee to scrutinise the post-government employment of retiring senior civil servants. |
Chief Executive Donald Tsang will form a committee to scrutinise the post-government employment of retiring senior civil servants.
The committee will include reputable people and the Secretary for the Civil Service. They will study ways to balance retired civil servants' employment rights, public expectation and prevention of conflict of interest.
Speaking to reporters this afternoon Mr Tsang said as Leung Chin-man and New World China Land have agreed to terminate their employment contract, there is no need to re-assess his employment application. However, the incident has shown there are problems with the existing system and procedures.
As new civil servants are now employed on a different system and will no longer have pensions, it is necessary for the city to review the post-service employment mechanism to see if it still meets present needs.
Firefighters mourned
Meanwhile, Mr Tsang expressed his sadness over the death of two firefighters in last week's Mong Kok blaze. He hoped the incident will enhance public awareness of fire safety.
The Fire Services Department has recommended the two officers to be given the Gold Medal for Bravery.
