District Council members' remuneration package will be improved in the new term, including a 10% salary increase, Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing says.
In a written reply to lawmaker Lau Wong-fat's query, Mr Tsang said council members' remuneration package will be improved with the enhancement of their role for the 2008-2011 term.
The bureau has invited the Independent Commission on Remuneration for Members of the councils to advise on the improvement measures.
Along with the 10% salary increase, there will be a new $48,000 annual miscellaneous expenses allowance which is non-accountable and may be used to cover expenses such as medical arrangements or personal-protection services.
The package will also include a $100,000 setting-up allowance and a $72,000 winding-up allowance per term.
Mr Tsang said the Legislative Council's Finance Committee has approved the recommendations. The bureau will continue to review the remuneration package for council members regularly.
