The Electoral Affairs Commission says the nomination period for the Election Committee Subsector Elections should be extended to 14 days to allow more time to process nominations and encourage more eligible people to come forward as candidates.
The commission today issued a report on the 2007 Chief Executive Election, reviewing the arrangements for the CE Election and the 2006 Election Committee Subsector Elections.
The commission recommended that in future elections, the EC Subsector Elections candidates' information sheets for display at polling stations be enlarged to include all relevant details about the candidates.
Counting process
There should be enhanced training for staff in the ballot-paper sorting process, to speed it up. The Registration & Electoral Office should review the counting-process workflow and procedures in releasing the election results.
Regarding the arrangements for the CE Election, the commission said the location's convenience should be accorded a high priority in deciding the polling and counting station venue. Where possible, a more convenient venue should be used.
Should a venue which is unfamiliar to most people be used in future CE elections, detailed transportation guides should be prepared and provided to electors in advance, so they can plan their trips to minimise unnecessary delays.
