The 2007 village representative elections have ended with an overall turnout rate above 67%, the Home Affairs Bureau says.

In the 10-day polling, 43,220 people cast their votes. The polls attracted 632 candidates from 191 villages to bid for 324 seats, including 200 indigenous inhabitants representatives and 124 resident representatives.

The turnout was 66.97% for residents seats, and 67.18% for indigenous inhabitants seats.

Secretary for Home Affairs Dr Patrick Ho thanked voters for their active participation, hoping the representatives would work with the Government to foster better village development.

There were 1,480 seats for this year's elections, with 994 seats returned uncontested and 160 seats vacant with no valid nominations.
