5-day week not mandatory

*

The five-day week will not be made mandatory in the Government, Secretary for Civil Service Denise Yue says.

She told legislators today that public and private sector organisations, taking into account their operational circumstances, client needs and staff views, are in the best position to decide whether to adopt the shortened work week.

On the initiative's first-phase implementation, she said government service quality has been maintained while the public and staff have generally welcomed the change.

Its benefits, like stress reduction, a better work-life balance, more opportunity for sport, recreation and culture activities, and a more harmonious family life, will improve civil service morale, Miss Yue said.

"We consider any impact on the economy and on consumption from the implementation of the five-day week in the Government should be insignificant."
