Dr Mak Sin-ping has been appointed Centre for Food Safety Controller.
The 54-year-old physician said the Food Safety Committee will be formed in the next few months to advise the centre on safety measures and review standards. It will comprise food safety specialists, industry participants and representatives of consumer groups.
"The Food Safety Centre now has 400 people, and it aims to add 70 more in 2006-07," she said.
Dr Mak joined the Government as a Medical & Health Officer in 1978. She was promoted to the Assistant Director of Health in 1995 and to Deputy Director of Health in 2000.
In 2001 Dr Mak was made Deputy Director (Food & Public Health) to plan and direct the implementation of policies on food safety control, veterinary public health and pest control, and oversee risk assessment programmes on food safety.
Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Dr York Chow said Dr Mak has proven leadership and administrative skills, and profound professional knowledge in food safety and public health issues, which are acknowledged internationally.
"With her extensive experience, I am confident she will be able to lead the centre in enhancing food safety in Hong Kong and meeting the challenges ahead," he said.
