Speaking to the press this afternoon, Hospital Authority Chairman Anthony Wu said the selection board considered Mr Solomon the outstanding candidate with vision and insight, as well as strong leadership and motivation.
"On the healthcare front, Mr Solomon has a wealth of healthcare management experience and qualifications and is also well familiarised with the operation of the public healthcare systems."
Succession planning top priority
Mr Solomon, 49, has been working as an executive director of the public health and aged-care services in Victoria, Australia, and is an experienced senior medical executive.
Mr Wu said succession planning will be one of Mr Solomon's most important jobs.
With the unfailing support of the authority's board and staff members, Mr Wu is confident that Mr Solomon will be able to bring in new impetus and lead the authority as it faces future challenges, such as service re-positioning, resource allocation, staff morale and quality of service provision.

Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Dr York Chow welcomed the appointment and is looking forward to the continuation of the good working relationship with the authority.
"With his background and experience, I am confident that Mr Solomon will bring new dimensions and prospective to the Special Administrative Region's public hospital services system."
