Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa has been elected vice chairman at the third session of the 10th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in Beijing today.
In his nomination, 2,065 members voted in favour, 21 opposed and 20 abstained.
The CPPCC National Committee closed its annual full session today after adopting a political resolution.
Premier Wen Jiabao presided over a plenary meeting of the State Council and approved Mr Tung's resignation as Hong Kong's Chief Executive.
Mr Tung said he is grateful the Central Government approved his resignation and added he will work hard in his new position.
He thanked the Central Government for supporting him and Hong Kong, and called on the community support Acting Chief Executive Donald Tsang in whom he has full confidence.
