Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa congratulated the Hong Kong table tennis team on winning the first silver medal for the city at the Athens Olympic Games, adding that their tenacity and strong will to succeed speak volumes for the Hong Kong spirit.
In the men's double gold medal match today, Hong Kong's Ko Lai-chak and Li Ching competed with top seeded pair Ma Lin and Chen Qi from the Mainland. The gold medal went to the Mainland duo.
Mr Tung said everyone here is proud of Ko and Li's marvellous performance.
"Their tenacity and strong will to succeed speak volumes for the Hong Kong spirit. The entire community will continue to give full support to our athletes. We wish them every success in the coming events," he said.
Extending his congratulations to the Hong Kong pair, Secretary for Home Affairs Dr Patrick Ho said they will become role models for youths and help to promote a sustainable sporting culture.
Mr Tung also congratulated the national team on winning the gold medal. Chinese top athletes who have recently won gold medals at the Athens Olympic Games will visit Hong Kong from September 6 to 8.
