Premier Wen Jiabao and British Prime Minister Tony Blair have reaffirmed their commitments to the implementation of the Joint Declaration on Hong Kong.

They have also agreed that it is in the interests of both sides to maintain and promote the city's prosperity and stability in accordance with the 'One Country, Two Systems' principle and the Basic Law.

Premier Wen met with Mr Blair in London on May 10. They discussed issues on further promotion of the Sino-British relationship and exchanged views on international and regional issues.

Speaking to the Hong Kong media after the meeting, Premier Wen said the two had touched on Hong Kong issues.

Central Authorities steadfastly adhere to principles

He told Mr Blair that the Central Authorities have remained steadfast in adhering to principles such as 'One Country, Two Systems', 'Hong Kong people ruling Hong Kong', 'High Degree of Autonomy', and the Basic Law.

Hong Kong's capitalism, legal system and people's lifestyle has not changed since the changeover, Premier Wen noted.

He also highlighted the fact that the degree of democracy and freedom Hong Kong people now enjoy is higher than ever, and the city's political development is progressing.

Universal suffrage still the ultimate goal

Premier Wen reiterated that universal suffrage is the ultimate goal for selecting Hong Kong's chief executive and legislative councilors, and the goal has not changed.

However, he pointed out that time is needed for the whole process, and a gradual development is the best approach to achieve the goal.

Premier Wen also explained to Mr Blair the National People's Congress Standing Committee's decision on Hong Kong's constitutional development.

He stressed the decision is serious and prudent, and it has been made after consulting the Hong Kong community extensively.

Decision ensures HK's long-term prosperity, stability

The decision helps ensure the interests and participation of all sectors here, and is beneficial to Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability, as well as the healthy development of its political system, he added.

Premier Wen believed most of the Hong Kong people will support the committee's decision, and called on the people to trust the Central Authorities.

He also appealed to Hong Kong people to work together, to abide by the law, and to capitalise on their strengths to revive the economy.
